Seasonal Ice Zone Observing Network (SIZONET)

On-ice thickness profiles, which allow for important ice morphology and roughness analysis, are derived through electromagnetic induction sounding using a Geonics EM31-MK2 ground conductivity meter. Our thickness transects are performed by towing the EM31 in a sled, either by snow machine or by foot. The instrument is set to log continuously at a rate determined by sled speed and the instrument footprint. Periodic measurements of snow thickness are made so that the snow layer thickness may be subtracted from the overall EM-derived layer (snow and ice) thickness.
